A Victorian Pharmacy
Step back into the warm glow of a late Victorian pharmacy, where polished wood cabinets line the walls, tiny labeled bottles wait on glass shelves, and the pharmacist’s counter is filled with remedies, tonics, soaps, perfumes, and neatly boxed goods. Our new online project, “A Victorian Pharmacy,” is a richly detailed 1/4 scale, 1:48 scene inspired by a small neighborhood shop from the late 1800s.
The finished scene is created inside a wooden box measuring approximately 4 1/4" wide, 3" deep, and 3 3/4" high, not including the frame. The interior measures approximately 4" wide, 3" deep, and 3" high. The room features original wallpaper, a textured ceiling, a real wood floor engraved with a medical symbol, and included lighting that runs from a coin cell battery with the on/off switch cleverly hidden beneath the unit. The frame and Plexiglas insert are also included.
The back wall is filled with a highly detailed pharmacy shelving unit with black and gold laser engraved signage, rows of tiny drawers, and shelves filled with period accessories. The base includes 39 non-opening drawers, each finished with labels and minuscule 3D printed bin-pull handles. The upper shelves are stocked with 8 3D printed urns decorated with authentic Victorian label designs, 20 large clear medicine bottles, and 24 smaller medicine bottles to color and label. The center section features a model of the ancient statue of Hygieia, a circa 1730 Albarello apothecary jar decorated with original artwork and Latin text, and two apothecary syrup jars.
The coordinating front counter has a Plexiglas front so the viewer can peek inside at 24 tiny boxes of medicines, syrups, elixirs, and other period goods, created from authentic Victorian packaging labels and arranged to your liking. On top of the counter are several wonderful focal pieces, including an original 3D model of a balance scale, a reproduction of a French brass mortar and pestle from the 1700s, and three ornate carboys — the large decorative glass vessels commonly displayed in Victorian pharmacies and filled with colored water.
Tucked into one corner is a beautifully detailed 3D resin National Cash Register, displayed on a reproduction of an authentic National Cash Register stand, complete with tiny numbering and labeling. Our high-resolution resin printing allows us to capture crisp, delicate detail, giving these tiny pieces the look and character of true miniature antiques.
Many of the tiny details in this project may look like antiques discovered one by one, but nearly all of the 3D printed models used in the pharmacy were created especially for this class by Cynthia Howe Miniatures. These are not stock models gathered from online sources; they were designed, scaled, printed, tested, and refined to suit this specific 1:48 Victorian pharmacy. The only exception is the model of Hygieia, which was adapted for use in the project.
The exquisite Perfume and Toiletry Display is beautifully modeled with rich scrollwork, delicate trim, and four clear shelves filled with period delights. For the ladies, there are perfumes in bottles and boxes. For the gentlemen, there are shaving lotions, hair tonics, grooming necessities, and a tiny shaving mug with brush. The bottom shelf holds items for baby, including lotions, creams, a tiny tin baby cup, and a “glass” Victorian baby bottle. Authentic vintage artwork, carefully scaled posters, framed advertisements, and laser-cut signage throughout the scene complete the feeling of a fully stocked neighborhood pharmacy.
As an added option, we are delighted to introduce Mr. Crowley, our Victorian pharmacist. Because some students love having a figure in their scenes while others prefer to keep the focus entirely on the setting, Mr. Crowley is available as an optional add-on. He is a highly detailed 3D resin figure, carefully designed, printed, cleaned, and primed so that he arrives ready for you to paint and finish. Instructions will be provided in an online tutorial with both photographic and written instructions for each and every step. If you have never taken one of our online classes, I encourage you to visit the Past Classes section and read the wonderful reviews our students have left after completing their projects. We also have an FAQ page explaining how the classes work and the benefits of completing a project using the online class format.
Because of the very large number of tiny printed, laser-cut, labeled, and hand-finished pieces needed to complete these kits, class size will be limited. I anticipate that we will need approximately 3–4 weeks to complete and ship the kits. As always, classes are offered on a first come, first served basis.
All materials and supplies needed to create the pharmacy are included in the kit, with the exception of paints, stains, glues, and basic tools. Students should have good quality paint brushes, acrylic paints and stains, acrylic varnish, a miter box and razor saw, scissors, an X-Acto knife, tweezers, and the usual small-scale crafting tools. A complete supply list will be included at the beginning of the online tutorial.
